Working in response to art historian, Aby Warburg’s practice of placing seemingly related and unrelated images and/or objects next to one another, (used predominately for his unfinished “Mnemosyne Atlas”) I created an instillation that dealt with my conception of masculinity through this lens of living as a gay man. I pulled images from art history as well as images torn from fashion magazines, films, and online social media posts to create an instillation that allowed images to reference one another. I was interested in what relationships viewers developed between images that were both planned and unexpected, aiming to examine this common visual vocabulary we have ingrained in us as a society. While I based my discovery in classical form I was interested in how these forms replicated themselves in contemporary culture.
